I don’t know which is better — the food, the view, or bragging rights to the Jamaica experience very few have. We’re sitting on the Star San Villa balcony overlooking the famous Blue Lagoon in Port Antonio, Jamaica, being served a veritable feast by award-winning Chef Brian Lumley, head chef at the R Hotel in Kingston, a popular Instagram presence here, who starts us off with cream of pumpkin soup, crab cakes with mango chutney, red wine marinated jerk lamb chops with sweet potato puree and for dessert, jackfruit cheesecake and purple sweet potato pudding with Jamaican rum cream sauce. It’s a meal — and a setting — I’ll think about for a long time…

PORT ANTONIO, JAMAICA — A pinch of turmeric… a sprinkle of pimento (all-spice).
Award-winning and well-known Jamaican Chef Brian Lumley is showing us how to make coconut curry shrimp and just-caught fish—lionfish, parrot fish, snapper—that will be served in the traditional Jamaican curry-type sauce.
We feel privileged to be getting a lesson from Chef Lumley here at Star San Villa overlooking the famous Blue Lagoon in Port Antonio. (The Blue Lagoon was the scene of a somewhat or not-so memorable film from 1980 with the same name, starring Brooke Shields.
Port Antonio, on the northeast coast of this Caribbean island, is less commercial and touristed. “It has always catered to the person who wants a laid-back experience… you don’t come here to party,” said Aeon Cummings, who is the founder of Otaheti Travel designed to help tourists find experiences like these…

“…The idea is less of a carbon footprint and less on room costs and more on unique experiences. “Think of throwing a good party, it’s natural.” Cummings said. “You can get the same view of the Blue Lagoon whether your room costs $100 a night or $500. It is less about what you can pay and more about what you experience.”
At the same time, Cummings believes, his company can give back to locals–from drivers and guides to artists, chefs and musicians.
And that means always having a plan B—or C at the ready. We were supposed to go fishing at the famous Robbins Bay, a fishing and farming village on the North Coast, with local artist, teacher and fisherman Henry Lowe, who is one of Otaheti’s “local ambassadors.” We were going to cook our catch for lunch…”

New tour company to start operations in Jamaica
A new, Connecticut-based based tour company, Otaheti Travel, is to start offering tours in Jamaica.
The company, formed by Jamaican-born American businessman Aeon Cummings, aims to deliver all-inclusive tour offerings. Although the company was officially launched earlier this month, Cummings plans to wait until late summer or early fall to offer his tailor-made programmes.
The plans are to boost the tour packages during the winter season in December.
According to Cummings, “We want to deliver awareness experiences for our clients by using many of the people we know on the island…A local artist, for example, might be the official driver on a trip, taking travelers off the beaten path to get an understanding of local culture.”
In explaining how the tours will work the Otaheti Travel boss said, “We’ll stop at jerk shacks as part of one itinerary and learn how to cook Jamaican food, visit small galleries with resident artists on another or hike mountains on a third.”…
